JOB DESCRIPTION - DRIVER

1.    INTRODUCTION

BOMA BOMA is a non-profit organization founded in 2006, with a vision to end extreme poverty in Africa’s drylands. We are driven by our mission to provide the people and governments of Africa Drylands with adapted economic inclusion programs that significantly reduce extreme poverty rates and enhance their ability to withstand multiple crises. This is achieved through the BOMA context-adaptive Rural Entrepreneur Access Project (REAP) graduation model designed to economically empower women, youth and refugees by equipping them with the skills, resources and linkages necessary to achieve sustainable livelihoods.

To date, BOMA has transformed the lives of over 1 million women, youth and refugees, focusing on last-mile communities most vulnerable to climate change and systemic shocks. By leveraging a tech-enabled, data-driven and participant-centered approach, BOMA ensures measurable, scalable and lasting impact.

2.    ABOUT THE PROGRAM 

BOMA is currently seeking qualified candidates for acting Program Manager position for the Changing Lives Project in Kakuma/Kalobeyei.

The Changing Lives Project, funded by the World Food Program (WFP) and implemented by BOMA, leverages the Rural Entrepreneurship Access Project (REAP) for Refugees model to accelerate household transitions from aid dependency to self-reliance under Kenya’s Differentiated Assistance (DA) Framework. Targeting 2,000 participants from Category 3 refugee households in Kakuma and Kalobeyei, the project provides an integrated package of life skills training, business coaching, conditional growth grants and market linkage support to strengthen enterprise capacity, financial literacy and resilience. By aligning with the Kenya DA Transition Framework (2025) and national policy instruments such as the Refugee Act of Kenya (2021) and SHIRIKA Plan (2024), the project promotes localized economic inclusion and coordinated livelihoods programming through existing structures like the KISEDP and other TWG’s. Ultimately, the initiative seeks to enable at least 1,600 households to progress toward Category 4 (self-reliant) status. The program implementation is ongoing and approaching the close out phase.

3. TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Safely drive staff and authorized persons to scheduled and authorized destinations for official BOMA travel and business

• Maintain a high standard of client service’/courtesy to both staff and partners while driving.

• Ensure punctuality and safety at all times. 

• Observe road and traffic laws, rules and regulations.

• Ensure no contraband/prohibited goods are in the vehicle. 

• Ensure no unauthorized personnel drive and/or are carried in the vehicle 

• Abide by the authorized driving times; adhere to the laid down departure times for all locations as stipulated.

• Ensure adherence to the vehicle field checklist before and after departure for all trips and ensure availability of the necessary items in all vehicles, such as first aid box, fire extinguishers, jack, jump starters, life savers etc.

• Immediately report any case of accident, injury or damage of vehicles to the supervisor or manager

• Ensure proper Maintenance, record keeping and insurance for the vehicle (further details of each of these roles are available).

• Ensure that BOMA equipment is used only for official BOMA business and that all BOMA policies and procedures are followed in the operation of the vehicle.

• Ensure that only BOMA staff or duly authorized persons are carried in the vehicle.

4. QUALIFICATIONS 

• Minimum KCSE Certificate – grade D+

• A Valid driving license

• Defensive driving and first aid certificates are an added advantage.

• A Certificate of Good Conduct.

• A minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible work experience in provision of field driving services – preferably in an NGO. 

• Should be an experienced driver with a safe driving record, with hands on experience in driving a variety of makes and models of four-wheel drive vehicles in rugged terrain. 

• Field experience in Northern Kenya 

• Should have basic mechanical skills

• Ability to clearly speak and write English and knowledge of a local language of the BOMA Project areas.
