BOMA is a non-profit organization founded in 2006, with a vision to end extreme poverty in Africa’s drylands. We are driven by our mission to provide the people and governments of Africa Drylands with adapted economic inclusion programs that significantly reduce extreme poverty rates and enhance their ability to withstand multiple crises. This is achieved through the BOMA context-adaptive Rural Entrepreneur Access Project (REAP) graduation model designed to economically empower women, youth and refugees by equipping them with the skills, resources and linkages necessary to achieve sustainable livelihoods.
To date, BOMA has transformed the lives of over 1 million women, youth and refugees, focusing on last-mile communities most vulnerable to climate change and systemic shocks. 2. JOB SUMMARY
The Incentive Communications Assistant will provide hands-on communications support to BOMA, with a primary base in Kakuma and regular travel to other field locations as assigned. Working under the guidance of the Communications Manager, the role will support the timely collection, development, production, and distribution of high-quality content that shows BOMA’s work and impact. The position combines field storytelling, photography and videography, digital communications, basic graphic design, content management, and communications support for program, donor, partner, and organizational activities.
The role is intended for a qualified incentive staff member with strong practical communications skills, sound judgment, creativity, and the ability to work independently in the field while remaining closely aligned with BOMA’s Communications team, brand standards, safeguarding requirements, and approval processes.
Responsibilities
3. RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING
3.1. Field Storytelling, Photography and Videography
3.1.1. Work with the Communications Manager to identify, plan, and develop multimedia stories in line with BOMA’s editorial calendar, program priorities, donor visibility requirements, and other communications objectives.
3.1.2. Travel within Kakuma, Kalobeyei, and other BOMA field locations as assigned to document program activities, participant stories, events, milestones, and evidence of impact.
3.1.3. Capture high-quality photographs, video footage, interviews, testimonials, and other field content using available communications equipment and approved approaches.
3.1.4. Support filming activities by assisting with composition, lighting, sound, interview set-up, direction, and other production requirements as needed.
3.1.5. Conduct or support interviews with participants, staff, partners, and other stakeholders using approved questions and in line with BOMA’s safeguarding, consent, and ethical storytelling standards.
3.1.6. Support video editing by organizing footage, preparing selects, producing basic edits where appropriate, and working with the Communications Manager or external editors on rough and final cuts.
3.1.7. Support BOMA in building and maintaining a strong, organized photo and video library from Kakuma and other field locations, ensuring content is accurately captioned, labeled, and stored on BOMA’s SharePoint and Google Drive, with names, dates, locations, program details, and consent records captured where required.
3.2. Digital Communications and Social Media Support
3.2.1. Support the development of social media content for BOMA’s digital channels in line with the approved editorial calendar and direction from the Communications Manager.
3.2.2. Draft short social media captions, field updates, event highlights, and other digital copy for review and approval.
3.2.3. Support the scheduling and posting of approved content across BOMA’s social media platforms, including LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, and X, as assigned.
3.2.4. Support real-time or timely digital coverage of field activities, donor visits, events, trainings, and key program moments when required.
3.2.5. Monitor basic engagement on assigned social media posts and flag relevant comments, questions, messages, or reputational concerns to the Communications Manager for appropriate follow-up.
3.2.6. Ensure all digital content shared is accurate, appropriately branded, approved, and consistent with BOMA’s tone, visual identity, safeguarding requirements, and donor visibility guidelines.
3.3. Graphic Design and Visual Content Support
3.3.1. Create simple, high-quality communications materials such as social media graphics, event cards, quote cards, field update visuals, presentation graphics, and other basic branded materials using approved BOMA templates and design tools.
3.3.2. Resize and adapt approved designs for different digital platforms and communication needs while maintaining brand consistency.
3.3.3. Support basic photo editing, image selection, cropping, and optimization for digital and print use.
3.3.4. Work with the Communications Manager to ensure all materials follow BOMA’s brand guidelines, including correct use of logos, fonts, colors, imagery, and donor or partner branding.
3.3.5. Assist in the design and formatting of participant record books and other program-related communications and visibility materials, as assigned, working under the guidance of the Communications Manager and in line with BOMA’s brand guidelines.
3.4. Communications Support in Kakuma and Other Field Locations
3.4.1. Serve as a key on-site communications resource in Kakuma, supporting regular collection of timely and relevant content from BOMA’s programs and teams.
3.4.2. Liaise with BOMA staff in Kakuma and other assigned locations to identify upcoming activities, milestones, participant stories, and communications opportunities.
3.4.3. Support communications planning and coverage for donor, partner, Board, media, and leadership visits to Kakuma and other field locations as assigned.
3.4.4. Support the Communications Manager with site-visit planning, including identifying suitable stories, locations, interviewees, visuals, and logistical communications needs.
3.4.5. Provide timely field updates, photographs, captions, interview notes, and other requested materials to the Communications Manager and relevant teams.
3.5. Content Development, Documentation and Asset Management
3.5.1. Support the drafting and development of short human-interest stories, participant profiles, photo stories, captions, quotes, event summaries, and other communications content.
3.5.2. Verify basic facts, names, locations, project details, and quotes before submitting content for review, and promptly flag any information that cannot be confirmed.
3.5.3. Organize, label, archive, and back up communications assets in agreed folders and systems to make content easy to retrieve and reuse.
3.5.4. Maintain accurate records of photo and video consent and ensure content is handled in line with BOMA’s safeguarding, privacy, and ethical storytelling requirements.
3.5.5. Support the preparation of approved communications materials for internal updates, donor reporting, presentations, newsletters, website content, and other organizational needs as assigned.
3.6. Team Coordination and General Communications Support
3.6.1. Participate in Communications and Marketing team planning, brainstorming, editorial, and review meetings as required.
3.6.2. Maintain regular communication with the Communications Manager on field activities, content opportunities, work priorities, progress, and any emerging communications risks or issues.
3.6.3. Support communications needs for events, campaigns, program launches, learning activities, and other organizational priorities as assigned.
3.6.4. Coordinate respectfully and professionally with BOMA participants, staff, partners, vendors, and other stakeholders while carrying out communications assignments.
3.6.5. Perform any other communications-related duties assigned from time to time by the supervisor.
Requirements
4. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
4.1. Demonstrated practical skills and experience in communications, journalism, media, digital marketing, graphic design, photography, videography, or a related area. Formal qualifications are an added advantage but are not required where the candidate can demonstrate the relevant skills and experience.
4.2. Practical experience in photography, videography, content creation, social media, journalism, storytelling, graphic design, or related communications work.
4.3. Ability to use photography and video equipment confidently and to capture clear, well-composed visual content in field settings.
4.4. Working knowledge of basic design and editing tools such as Canva, Adobe applications, CapCut, or similar tools.
4.5. Good writing and verbal communication skills, with the ability to develop clear captions, short stories, interview notes, and field updates in English. Knowledge of Kiswahili and relevant local languages is an added advantage.
4.6. Good digital literacy, including familiarity with social media platforms, smartphones, computers, file-sharing systems, and basic content management processes.
4.7. Strong organization and attention to detail, including the ability to manage files, meet deadlines, follow instructions, and maintain accurate information.
4.8. Ability and willingness to travel regularly to field locations, work in dynamic environments, and occasionally support activities outside normal working hours when communications coverage requires it.
4.9. Demonstrated professionalism, discretion, cultural sensitivity, and respect when working with participants, colleagues, partners, and external stakeholders.
